I decided to make another post for today after reading John Cow’s latest post. I thoroughly enjoy reading John Cow’s blog. Not only is the site design great, he has a very outgoing writing style. Without actually writing what The Cow wrote for his headline (you can either see it above, or follow the link) I will tell you it was pretty bad. If you follow the comments he offended a great deal of people already who claim he lost them as readers. Now, I know the word he used in his headline is very offensive, but I think some people are overreacting. You don’t have to read his blog if it offends you. The first thing a person reads is the headline. Simply leave if you don’t like the post.
As a reader, you are adding fuel to the fire by reading the whole post and commenting on how you disagree and how offended you are. This may sound bad, but it is John Cow’s blog. He can write and post about anything he wants. If he was worried about losing the majority of his readers he would have never been open and honest about this post. He does have a “potty mouth” and “that word” probably doesn’t belong on his blog, but this is his decision. Personally, I would rather have a blogger’s writing style match their actual personality. If I am offended by the post I won’t read and I definitely won’t comment.
“Bad Publicity is Actually Good Publicity”
This statement is so true. John may lose some readers because of “the word” he used, but he is going to get a huge hit of traffic. People will stop by simply to see what others have to say. Even Darren from ProBlogger made some time to comment and show his disgust. Obviously, if The Cow felt bad about using “the word” he would have edited the post by now. He knows he will getting a lot of traffic, even if its people just “slowing down to see the car accident”.
Update
Looks like John Cow decided to censor “the word” in his post. It seems it just boils down to a little bit of cultural differences. The Cow is from Ireland, which I didn’t even know until now. The post is still getting a lot of comments.
